Hey There...
I am 28 years old, and was wondering at what age a woman is supposed to start going for regular mammograms. I have not ever had one, and keep hearing that I do not need to go until my late thirties/early forties. I would like to confirm this, because I want to take all precautions possible. As a side note, my OBGYN has told me that my breasts are a bit fibro-cystic. He stated that I do not have the condition or disease, but that they are naturally "lumpy" (my Mom has this issue too). This makes it difficult for me to give myself regular exams, and so I am sure to get them twice a year from my OBGYN. However, if I should be getting reular mammograms at my age, I want to be sure I am going, and doing the right thing for my body. I appreciate the your time!

A healthy 28 year old woman with no family history of breast cancer can wait for the screening age of 40. It is good that she recognizes the "lumpy" condition of her breast tissue which is normal in a young woman who has monthly cycles. Fibrocystic breasts are not a condition or a disease as she points out, it is common in more than 80% of all pre-menopausal women. By getting to know the texture of breast tissue, anything that seems "new" or "different" would warrant a clinical breast examination and probable ultrasound at her age. Otherwise, the American Cancer Soceity guidelines are for mammograms to begin at age 40 and yearly thereafter.
